This past weekend, the 8th annual Calgary Ukrainian Festival was held!
The festival was filled with morning to night performances and a multitude of vendors to pick up some Ukrainian swag from. The performances includes various Ukrainian dance ensembles as well as instrumental performances and children and adult choirs. It was incredible, there was always something to watch on the main stage!
Through cooperation between the Board of Directors for the festival and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, we were able to bring in groups to promote diversity within the Ukrainian community. There was a Chinese interpretive dance as well as a Yugoslavian gypsy dance.
There were many other activities for people to participate in such as, a face painting station for children, a small museum setup full of traditional Ukrainian dress and wedding traditions. The festival also had Ukrainian food and beverages straight from Ukraine.
There were so many vendors at the festival as well! There were Ukrainian themed t-shirts, key chains, hats, bags and shoes for sale. As well as Ukrainian blouses, tapestries and table cloths. There was one booth that was selling donated items from Ukraine to raise money to support the soldiers in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress also had a booth at the festival to promote the Canada 150 Youth Engaging Youth project in Alberta this summer. Our booth had pamphlets, booklets, information, pens and stickers for people to take and learn about UCC. We had lots of interest in our project and I cannot wait to hear the feedback through various individuals and organizations! Here are two kids sporting some Ukrainian gear as well as Canada 150 logos!
They are already starting planning for the next Ukrainian Festival in Calgary and I sincerely hope to see you all there! Let us continue to make this festival of ours a raging success year after year!
